Air Force Junior ROTC (JROTC) is a one-credit elective that is available for any student in 9th-12th grade living in Wasatch County (including home-schooled). This is a unique opportunity for students since there are only 7 high schools in Utah with AFJROTC and Wasatch HS is the only unit (in any service) in the Wasatch Back. AFJROTC combines academics, leadership education, fitness, community service and extra-curricular teams and clubs.
Students can take AFJROTC for one year or all four years. The academic curriculum includes Aviation History, Science of Flight, Space Exploration, World Cultures and Survival. Leadership Education includes health/wellness, civics/govt, communication and teamwork, career and college awareness and senior level management. Cadets also learn leadership with hands-on experiences and will advance in rank the longer they stay in the program.
There are several extra-curricular competitive teams like Armed Drill Team, Academic Bowl, Raider (military fitness) and Marksmanship. Plus many clubs like Color Guard, Model Rockets/Planes, Drones, Kitty Hawk Honor Society and Saber Team. Cadets completed over 240 events during the 2020-2021 school year and did over 1300 of community service hours to help Wasatch HS and the valley.
Cadets also have the opportunity to earn speciality badges, ribbons, rank and national awards. There are scholarship opportunities only available to cadets like Flight Academy (where you earn your private pilots license) and ROTC college scholarships.
Cadets are NOT in the military nor have any military obligation. But if a student is even thinking about a career in the military (officer or enlisted), it is highly recommended that they enroll in JROTC. There are specific benefits if a student successfully completes 2-3 years, to include additional rank/pay if they enlisted or even increased chances for military academy appointments or ROTC scholarships (no matter what service).
Please come to our Educational Booth on 10 and 17 June, plus 5, 12 and 19 August, for additional information and meet current cadets.
